Episode 22: Well Built Reputation Leads to Start-Up Success

Jennifer GilkJennifer Gilk of Legacy Law, PLLC is back for a second mentoring session. Her dairy farm upbringing influenced her career and life choices. Nestled in the heart of farm country, “Redwood County and Renville County, where the richest soil on the planet is located”, says Jennifer. There is no need for irrigation.

Jennifer invested 22 years building a general legal practice with three other partners. Over time she specialized in helping farmers transition their legacy to the next generation, estate planning, and corporate law. What changed in her partnership that led her to decide to start a private practice?

How did she fund the first few months of her private practice? What is her strategy for cash flowing the business?

Why does she describe her husband, Tim as the ‘Greatest Husband on the Planet’? What partnering advice Jennifer shares is helpful to you?

Why does she refer to herself, her husband, and her three teenagers as the ‘Von Gilks’?

Mentoring Tips: Jennifer described what led her to starting a private practice. Was starting her own private practice a long-term vision or goal, or something else?

This mentoring session brings out more of who Jennifer Gilk is, and who she is becoming. Use her story to reinforce how important it is to be you and utilize your upbringing to show up in your life in a powerful way. Take a scary risk to emotionally stretch and strengthen your character.

Take a few minutes to jot down where you are at in your life right now. What are you aware of?

How do you feel? If feelings of joy and happiness surface, build on those feelings by completing the toughest tasks on your accomplishment list, first this week.

If you feel inadequate, not good enough, or any other guttural feeling, identify in what area you feel inadequate. Get a sense of where in your body the feeling of inadequacy is hanging out. Allow yourself to fully experience the feeling of inadequacy. It doesn’t control you. It doesn’t define you.

Add breathe. In and out. Deep breathes. Slow breathes. Breathe through the feelings. Let those feelings go with each exhale.

When you are ready, turn your focus to what you accomplished last week. Write down your greatest accomplishments. Make a list of what you would like to accomplish this week. Move into action. Now get going.
