Episode 26: Sorting Out Unresolved Feelings in a Creative Block

Jennifer NelsonTransparency and truthfulness in a new client discussion forged a deeper connection. “Exposing myself by letting a new client know what I didn’t know about a project proved positive,” Jennifer says during our fourth strategic mentoring session. The new customer thanked her and offered to mentor her in the area she needed to learn plus paid her for her artwork. Authentic conversations don’t always turn out so fruitful. What you can count on, though, is the gift of learning more about who the other person is while staying grounded in who you are.

In this session our conversation smoothly transitions from client relationships to family relationships. Feelings of manipulation and sadness linger. Unresolved feelings surface. Nancy is using the Anatomy of Trust tool created by Brené Brown (www.courageworks.com) to facilitate their conversation as they move through the process to break through the creative block. Jennifer is opening the vault, showing integrity, being non-judging toward herself, and working to understand how to be generous in her thinking. What is she discovering about herself?

Mentoring Tips: Notice what happens in your body when you identify a smaller hurt like a bad moment with an employee, or a client, or a customer; a rough parenting day; an outburst at a partner or spouse. When Nancy feels hurt, she feels this mundane hurt in her throat. Her voice becomes strained. She feels unsteady on her feet. She goes inward to bring the hurt up and out of her body. Her breath is tight like breathing through a straw. What happens to you? Write down your experience. Place a hand where you are experiencing the hurt. Say ‘soothe’ three times. Notice how you feel.

Eight steps to forgiveness will facilitate your process to heal the hurt you identify this week. In July, we will air another episode with Jennifer. She will be joined in the studio with Mary Hayes Grieco, a spiritual teacher and pragmatic emotional healer to facilitate the healing of Jennifer’s broken heart. Implement Mary Hayes Grieco’s steps of forgiveness to heal your hurt.
