Episode 44: Innovation Shaped Stevie Ray’s College Years

stevieray_episode44In our second of three mentoring sessions with Stevie Ray, we hear how he shaped his comedic and improvisation career. Sometimes when you move toward your future, like working toward a Bachelor of Arts degree in speech pathology at Moorhead State University, you discover who you are.

What Color Is Your Parachute? by Richard N. Bolles, is a practical manual for job-hunters and career-changers. It is updated each year. This book helped Stevie realize his life work. Armed with this new information about himself, he mustered up the courage to offer to design an entire curriculum for a degree in The Theory and Performance of Humor. Thankfully, the late 1970s was a time colleges and universities across the country were open to allow students more freedom to shape new degreed programs. And, it was a time where scholarly innovators like Stevie Ray persisted to make his dream come true.

Hear more of his Rochester beginnings, growing up with three siblings, and his family life now. This episode is packed with juggernauts of information including how the brain works and tips for thriving in a service business.
