Happy Holidays! In the Fiber Loft with fiber artisan, Steven Berg, we learn of his wild adventures around the world, his inspiration for fashion and many experiences in between. Steven is the owner of StevenBe in Minneapolis. He has a head for math and margins, and a heart for fashion. He experiments with new ways of saying things just to get people’s attention. He knits for pop culture, art, and fashion.
The art of inspiration and surprise have spurred a resiliency in Steven’s spirit. Bullying in his youth was challenging. Maybe that is why he is motivated to help others ‘live an exciting day.’
His mother’s yarn shop and fellow knitters in Wisconsin provided a safety haven and a place to always be productive and creative. Raised by a strict East German Mother and Swedish Father, who was a high school physical education teacher, principal, and administrator, created a complimentary upbringing. He has so much to share. “It Smells Like Snow” hats and faux fur pom-poms inspired by the show, The Gilmore Girls. What is the story behind that idea and other pop culture creations?StevenBe was chosen in 2016 as one of the top 10 greatest knitting and yarn shops in North America. The name StevenBe was invented from a desire of Steven’s to be known as a one name persona, like Madonna or Sting. How has he expanded his branded enterprise? Why did combining two stores into one make sense to him?

Berg began his career early as a young boy, furiously knitting lines of sequin dresses for a discerning clientele of Barbies in Wisconsin. This naturally led him to become a star student in fashion design at both Parsons and the Fashion Institute of Technology.
SteveBe is a 6,000 square foot studio devoted to fiber arts. The former fire station in South Minneapolis showcases Steven Bergs’ personal collection of antiques and objects d’artes from around the world within a grander and yet more personal milieu. It is the grown up version of The Factory, Andy Warhol’s infamous incubator of 70s pop art – without the drugs and alcohol. Instead, delightful food, gorgeous design, innovative programming and personalized service will inspire the next wave in needle arts.
The studio is a cross between your grandmother’s attic and your eccentric uncle’s boudoir and is literally packed to the rafters with the very best and most unusual yarn and accoutrements the knitting world has to offer. There is never a dull moment at the shop. Events and classes never cease. They include weekend morning previews and full length afternoon workshops. The studio’s fully-equipped kitchen promises gourmet brunches, lunches, and teas.
