Episode 55: Competing In A Price Sensitive World

In the Fiber Loft for a third mentoring conversation with fiber artisan, Steven Berg. He identifies a common theme I see amongst business owners: taking care of everyone and everything but oneself. I have included a mentoring tip below to help in this area.

This same theme surfaces with me too. When a seed of a new idea is planted in my head, the innovation process begins. I like to explore where I could take this idea. How viable is it? How can I try out my idea without investing too much time, energy, and financial resources to experiment with its viability?

It takes so much energy to keep a business vibrant and current. Customer behavior shifts with technology trends. Hear how Steven is shifting with his clients and Steven’s philosophy of how he competes in a price sensitive world.

Other ideas Steven is thinking about: the need for more experiences and less stuff. He is starting with himself. Knitting relates to life. Make something, enjoy the journey, there is gratification in the result. There is no right and wrong. There are no mistakes only variations; especially in knitting patterns.

Take in his advice for business owners. Here are a couple of tidbits: base your business on learning, developing a non-profit entity can help with experiencing humility (the power of volunteering), align activities to build your brand. Hear a knitting analogy that supports a growth opportunity.

Mentoring Tips:

  • A simple way to go inward during your day, especially when you feel angry, hurt, unable to focus or, anxious, is to sit and meditate for even as little as six-minutes at a time. Try it.
    • My husband, Matthew Foli, and I did a guided 6-minute meditation in the car while we were waiting for our daughter’s return from a Nordic Ski Camp adventure. We did a meditative body scan. The dinger went off. I opened my eyes, and the bus was pulling into the school parking lot. I felt relieved and slightly refreshed because I took a few minutes for myself. It was also fun to meditate with Matthew, mutual benefits, an added perk.

From StevenBe.com Steven is a fiber artisan that is armed with a wealth of experience, a daring sense style, and a firm belief in the transformative power of creativity that knitting or crocheting offers to all who are brave enough to push the boundaries.

Berg began his career early as a young boy, furiously knitting lines of sequin dresses for a discerning clientele of Barbies in Wisconsin. This naturally led him to become a star student in fashion design at both Parsons and the Fashion Institute of Technology.

SteveBe is a 6,000-square foot studio devoted to fiber arts. The former fire station in South Minneapolis showcases Steven Berg’s personal collection of antiques and objects d’artes from around the world within a grander and yet more personal milieu.  It is the grown-up version of The Factory, Andy Warhol’s infamous incubator of 70s pop art –  without the drugs and alcohol. Instead, delightful food, gorgeous design, innovative programming and personalized service will inspire the next wave in needle arts.

The studio is a cross between your grandmother’s attic and your eccentric uncle’s boudoir and is literally packed to the rafters with the very best and most unusual yarn and accoutrements the knitting world has to offer. There is never a dull moment at the shop. Events and classes never cease. They include weekend morning previews and full length afternoon workshops. The studio’s fully-equipped kitchen promises gourmet brunches, lunches, and teas.
