Episode 71: My Two-Year Dual Innovation Journey

Discover how to reinvent yourself as you redesign your business. That’s the “Dual Innovation Journey.” Here is my personal story, in blog format. Past podcasts that share others’ stories are identified below.

I coined the phrase “Dual Innovation Journey” because in working with thousands of entrepreneurs and business owners since 1992, there isn’t one person that hasn’t changed how they lead when they start their business or when they revamp their business model. When I reflect on the previous 70 podcast episodes, they are filled with conversations about the dual tension between working on oneself and keeping the cash flowing through innovation.

For me, 2015 and 2016 were filled with personal and professional changes. In 2015, I revamped my website and prepared to begin the podcasts. In January 2016, I began taping the podcasts on a weekly basis. I also was in individual therapy to “finally” wrap up family-of-origin issues; online Brené Brown courses including a parenting class; completed Brené’s Daring Greatly and Rising Strong coursework which sped up therapy sessions; online Design Thinking coursework; email marketing online class; honed my interview skills; and I learned a whole host of new technology.

Oh, did I mention that from September to December 2016 I took a 200-hour (16 hours/week) yoga teacher training program? That required freezing meals for my husband and daughter, who appear to only recognize the location of the dining room table, and not the refrigerator.

During the journey, I felt out of sorts and uncomfortable pretty much every day last year. I had numerous freak out moments too. I just breathed my way through uncomfortable situations where I was put on the spot to teach yoga. Or, sat with anxiety before the start of every yoga class. I cried my way through frustrations with learning new software, overwhelm, and technology glitches. Thank God for yoga (taught by someone else), my yoga teachers and fellow yogis, journalism, meditation, empathic friends, awesome clients, and patient collaborators! You know who you are, thank you! This part of the journey is now complete.

I have found the beauty in aging. It is the wisdom and empathy I have gained through a life of nurturing curiosity, practicing and refining new skills, continuing to take calculated risks, and living a purposeful life. I feel more alive and engaged in life! I want the same for you!

My profound awakening inside plus new skill sets positioned me for this next phase of my lifework. Mentoring others who are on the journey to reinvent themselves as they redesign their business. I have always done this “dual innovation journey” work but didn’t have the new tools I acquired and the phrase that will make it much easier to talk about. I feel better equipped to handle whatever is to come and to work with you through a process I designed that is working for others. There is enough room to tailor fit your unique journey into the process. Accept the challenge. Join a WeMentor Entrepreneurial and Leadership LAB today!

Podcast Guest Examples on the Dual Innovation Journey

I coined the phrase “Dual Innovation Journey” because one doesn’t revolutionize a business and revamp their business model without reinventing oneself. When I reflect on the previous 70 episodes, they are filled with conversations about the dual tension between working on oneself and keeping the cash flowing through innovation, as mentioned above.

Not every podcast guest is in the midst of a Dual Innovation Journey. Here are three guests that are:

Jennifer Nelson. She didn’t set out in our first podcast mentoring conversation to talk about her creative block. It came about through more conversations. I went with the flow because the innovation process is familiar to me and always sparks my curiosity. I am engaged in sorting out the pieces of the puzzle and like to help where I can provide insights and value. I pulled in Mary Hayes Grieco in for a podcast session to help Jennifer release some grief that surfaced three podcast sessions into the process.

Dean Hyers and Pete Machalek. Individual podcast sessions led to a couple joint podcasts. An event triggered Dean’s reinvention well before we met. Dean’s reinvention prompted Pete’s revolutionary process. They allowed enough space for each to change and shift in their business relationship. They recommitted to their 15+ year business partnership as they clarified their business model and began rolling out a new blog and published another book.

Self-Mastery. In the Merriam-Webster Dictionary (2017) self-mastery is a noun, and described as the power to control one’s actions, impulses, or emotions. We facilitate self-mastery through self-actualization exercises such as the Self-Awareness Mentoring Journal, doing mindfulness yoga which honors everybody and every mind, teaching you the rising strong process, authentic dialogue with each other, and other activation exercises. I believe the energy put toward self-mastery helps you master your life and deepens your ability to contribute to the world through your lifework.
