Episode 87: Every Leader Needs to Know This Concept

Daniel Prosser left Minnesota in 1983 as a young, successful entrepreneur, on to investigate his next venture in Houston, Texas. He continued to startup and sell ventures; a restless serial entreprenuer, eventually returning to, in his words, ‘an amazing state,’ Minnesota. The common theme in each venture he started was a concept that every leader needs to know. Podcast Download

I am tempted to tell you what the concept is, but, no. It would be like telling you the end of a well told story. I don’t want you mad at me! When you listen, you will know exactly what I’m talking about. Enjoy discovering the answer and Dan’s insightful self-knowledge.

Tax Reduction and Reform Message to Congress. January 20, 1978 (inauguration day)

  • Jimmy Carter wrote, “To the Congress of the United States: I recommend that Congress enact a series of proposals that will reform our tax system and provide $25 billion in net tax reductions for individuals and businesses.
o Fundamental reform of our tax laws is essential and should begin now. Tax relief and the maintenance of a strong economy are essential as well. The enactment of these proposals will constitute a major step towards sustaining our economic recovery and making our tax system fairer and simpler.
  • THE NEED FOR TAX REDUCTION
I propose net tax reductions consisting of:
—$17 billion in net income tax cuts for individuals, through across-the-board rate reductions and a new personal credit, focused primarily on low and middle-income taxpayers.
—$6 billion in net income tax cuts for small and large corporations, through reductions in the corporate tax rates and extensions of the investment tax credit.
—$2 billion for elimination of the excise tax on telephone calls and a reduction in the payroll tax for unemployment insurance.“
 Jimmy Carter, 39th President of the United States (1978-1981), sought to make the government competent and compassionate amidst an economic crisis that produced rising energy prices and stagflation (inflation high, economic growth rates slow, and high unemployment).
