Episode 90: What Does Over Reaching and Over Training Have To Do With YOU?

Congratulations to all Ironman participants who competed around the world yesterday! In honor of sports, Scott Welle, sports psychologist, is in the studio! Sports analogies are used all the time in leadership. Today’s title is related to sports. Over Reaching is a necessary tactic to improve your athletic ability. Over Training is taxing on the body and can cause injury.

When setting audacious leadership goals you break down barriers as a strategy to build a stronger you and a stronger team. How are your daily routines strengthening your ability to lead?

Scott is really motivating. He has had one of the toughest years of his life. He is vulnerable. You can hear his courage and how he applies his mental training to his life. His mantra is having an attitude of gratitude. We discuss groups he participates in and those he doesn’t. Output vs. input. We discuss books like Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers and Daniel Coil’s The Talent Code, and their philosophies analyzing “quality vs. quantity” programs.

Talking with Scott reminds me of a growth mindset where your life is viewed as a journey of learning, and not a test to make you look foolish or to avoid. Therefore, you accept uncertainty without fear. You seek new experiences instead of avoiding them. You have a broad repertoire of skills and achievements you build upon, not a narrow repertoire that can confine you.

You understand customers are people and as a human being you detect new growth opportunities. You learned this from Cindy Banchy last week. It is never too late to start running, even starting at age 51. It may lead to greater things! How encouraging and challenging would a person like that be to work with and work for? You know you would be motivated to change up your life and break through to new dimensions of yourself and how you lead.

With a growth mindset, you manage risk through action and place small bets, quickly. You succeed more often in new situations which builds on the journey and creates a desire to keep learning. Now listen to Scott Welle describe his life work and insights to help you ‘outperform the norm.’

o For example: To start your day, you could try Jack Canfield’s approach, The Hour of Power (www.jackcanfield.com). This routine is making a difference in my life.
