Episode 99: Playing Through Your Issues with Debbie Unterman

Dean Hyers and Pete Machalek of Sage Presence, thank you for your generous monetary contribution to my podcast.

Episode Notes

Rock-n-roll and therapy go together. Last week we were rockin with Tim Kletti. This week we’ll be playing with our issues. Our conversation will not disappoint, although I do stumble around a bit with my words. That is just how I roll and put myself out into the world. A work in progress, as they say.

Alchemical Hypnotherapy is an interactive trance process that helps people heal root causes of emotional, physical, spiritual, and psychological issues. Debbie Unterman facilitates this timeless therapeutic practice by guiding clients to access their own positive inner resources empowering her clients to love the voices in their heads.

My conversation with Ms. Unterman reminded me of something I read recently about mindfulness or seeing with the minds eye by Daniel J. Siegel, M.D. Mindsight: “The mind, can be defined, in part, as an embodied and relational process that regulates the flow of energy and information. As one important feature of the mind, Daniel J. Siegel writes, is a regulatory process, the mind has at least two essential aspects: monitoring and modifying. When we drive a car, we need to monitor where we’re going and then modify our direction and speed.

Mindsight enables us to see the flow of energy and information more clearly and in depth and then to shape that flow in a desired positive direction–often toward an integrated state of the mind, the brain, and in our relationships with one another.” (The Mindful Therapist, 2010). Use mindsight to engage your mind and your brain to bring you into the present moment while you listen deeply to our conversation. Notice the concepts like highway hypnosis we discuss and how each concept resonates in your body and mind and with your relationships. Is there a positive way you can manipulate your mind? Can you use this as a tool to cultivate the truth? For example, “having a thought or feeling, and the awareness of the thought or feeling is a first step to moving from cohesive states of defensive adaptation to coherent states of truth-filled living.” (p. 93)

  • Here is an excerpt from John Bradshaw’s New York Times 2016 Obituary.
John Bradshaw, whose ideas about family dysfunction and the damaged “inner child” concealed within most adults made him one of the most popular and influential self-help evangelists of the 1990s, died on Sunday in Houston. He was 82. Mr. Bradshaw sold more than 12 million books. His many titles included “Creating Love” (1992), based on a 10-part PBS series, and “Family Secrets: What You Don’t Know Can Hurt You” (1995).

His last book, “Post-Romantic Stress Disorder: What to Do When the Honeymoon Is Over” (2014), had its origins, like much of his work, in his own life — in this case his failed first marriage, which ended in divorce in 1989. Mr. Bradshaw disarmed critics by freely admitting his shortcomings. “I have a lot of narcissistic wounds,” he told The Observer. “I have had a lot of need for the audience.” John Bradshaw NY Times Obituary RIP John! I am so grateful you shared your insights with us.
