Episode 106: Goalsetting Carribean Style

Today’s guest, Engel Jones, is known for his podcast Twelve Minute Convos. I was one of his guests in 2017. His warmth and insights come from his ability to be an empathic listener. Find our conversation from his podcast in the Mentoring Resources. How would you answer his eight questions? Download

We learn more about the man behind the warm conversations. He has had 1001 conversations in three months and up to 18-taped conversations a day. How does he do it? What motivates him to set such goals? What are his goals for this year?

I have always wondered what it would be like to live in a vacation area of the Twin Island of Trinidad and Tobago. Find out how he and his wife, Amanda Jones, an author and poet, are raising two entrepreneurial sons. One is a self-described super athlete at age 4 and the other an 8-year-old avid reader who is reading 50 books a year. For example, Virtues and fairy tales and Ken Blanchard’s, Who Moved My Cheese. They are raising their boys to see the world outside of a box.

  • Personal branding is in. Engel is particularly skilled at creating Y.O.U.R., Your Own Unique Real Self. He practices what he preaches. He is cultivating his sons to become their own unique real selves and embrace others to also have their own unique real self. His 8-year-old son is working with a CEO on developing entrepreneurship skills in children ages 7 to 12. Assets and liabilities are worth knowing.

What is the measuring stick he uses to have a purposeful and meaningful conversation?

We finish out our mentoring conversation with Goalsetting Carribean Style. Listen to how he approaches goalsetting and use it to refine your goalsetting approach. Here is a sample of some of Engel’s goals for 2018. His strategy: do things that naturally surround the goal adding some flexibility to goal achievement.

  • Mental: Daily reading and writing every day for 365 days. He can choose the topics.
  • Spiritual: Daily Meditation 365 days, and attempting 3xs per day. Focus on letting go and being in the present moment.
  • Lifework: Have solid work experience from each individual and group coaching sessions. He set a financial amount of money to generate in a certain amount of time. His focus is to dive into each coaching session like he is going to school, to learn and absorb everything he can.
  • Physical: walk 3,000 steps each day and play with his children.
  • Financial: daily recording of income and expenses every day.
  • Family: Daily hugs and kisses.
  • Personal: Daily giving of his time and skill to make sure someone is better. Gently pass along lessons he has learned. Give and receive fully in a conversation.

Mentoring Tips

  1. Use Engel’s goalsetting techniques to hone your goal achievement.
  2. Build upon your own momentum.
  3. Implement Engel’s advice: be more empathetic and be a bit more present in each conversation you have with others.
