Episode 93: BRAVING, The Brené Brown Way

My heart goes out to those closest to this tragedy. Here is a link to help victims of Sunday’s Las Vegas Massacre. How To Help Victims Thank you Mickey Mikeworth, of Mikeworth Consulting, for your monetary donation to my podcast program. Recently, Brené Brown was in the Twin Cities on her BRAVING The Wilderness book tour. Her fourth book. I highly recommend it if you want a practical approach to truly belonging! Download Podcast Episode Brené Brown writes, “True belonging is not about fitting in, pretending, or making the people around us comfortable because that’s safer. The four practices of true belonging require us to be vulnerable, get uncomfortable, and learn how to be with people without sacrificing who we are and what we value.” This was just reinforced recently in a conversation I had with a family of origin, family member. I can’t ‘out’ someone close to me publicly.
I tried an empathic approach in responding to a hot political topic over a celebration dinner. “You seem to feel strongly about how athletes approach the national anthem,” I say as his voice took over the room. “Darn right I do,” he retorts. Then, bam, a verbal slap in the face. He says, “I disrespect you because you are against those who fought for our country.” I tried to say, “the argument is really about discrimination and racism” but it was too late. Affection was later withheld. And there I am, disconnected. This book is timely and important. I will keep trying out civil ways to stay connected when difficult topics come up. In these times where BS statements ripple around the world, we need to not be discouraged. We need to ban together. Four practices Brené Brown says, “will challenge how we think about ourselves, show up with one another, and find our way back to courage and connection. They are:
  1. People are hard to hate close up. Move in.
  2. Speak truth to BS. Be civil.
  3. Hold hands. With strangers.
  4. Strong back. Soft front. Wild heart.
In today’s episode Mike Kabeya and I discuss how to implement the BRAVING acronym and hold ourselves accountable, especially during highly emotional and difficult conversations.
