Episode 109: How to REPAIR Difficult Relationships with Kit Welchlin

Today’s guest, Kit Welchlin.

When you change your behavior in a close relationship, how many times does it take for the other person to accept the new behavior? How many times do you give them to respond to the new behavior? In a fast-paced, informative, funny, and effervescent mentoring conversation, Kit Welchlin describes his life and career as a public speaker, trainer, author, and multi-venture entreprenuer. Did you grow up in a position-centered family?

He sprinkles techniques he uses in handling difficult people and other valuable communication techniques you can use. Kit says, “Everyone is normal, until you get to know them.” LOL! Click or Tap to DOWNLOAD

What movie gave Kit the idea to create self-characters resembling his internal struggles? These characters appear in vignettes inside his two books, The Communication Kit, Volume 1 and The Communication Kit, Volume II. Light-hearted books with serious topics.

Which is Kit’s passion, public speaking or real estate? How do these focuses complement each other? How did he wind up owning a manufacturing company in his twenties?

Dr. Joseph DeVito outlined a R.E.P.A.I.R. Model in The Interpersonal Communication Book. The concept has been effective with over 20 of Kit’s clients and used himself to keep his relationships on solid footing.

“This model isn’t a quick fix,” says Kit. If it takes several years to get a relationship off track, it will take time and vulnerability to try new ways of interacting to repair hurtful communications. I have included the model, so you can easily jot down acronym notes and start using this tool today!

Kit adds another author’s proven concepts to the R.E.P.A.I.R. Model. Raymond Zeuschner outlines in Communicating Today the number of times it could take to repeat a new behavior before it changes the interaction in a relationship.
How many times have you been in a situation where you change your behavior to improve a relationship and the other person doesn’t respond in turn? What if you allowed more times for the other person to respond?

Did you know it could take 27 consecutive repetitions of a new behavior to form a new communication pattern? Kit combines this knowledge with the REPAIR Model to help his audiences and clients understand what they need to do to be successful in repairing important relationships.

Remember, “1% of the population is ruthless,” says Kit. After giving your best efforts to repair a relationship, let go and move on with the knowledge of Maya Angelo, “when someone shows you who they are, believe them.”
