Episode 186: How WeMentor Self-Leadership, 1 of 2

As a leader, when there is a problem where do you look first? We encourage leaders to reflect on their own functionality and participation in the creation of a problem. I listen to what is going on with empathy before the finger starts bending back to the self. What is my responsibility in this?

Before one commits to self-leadership, we tend to project authority onto other people, groups, and institutions. We let them do the thinking for us. We let these external entities determine our beliefs and let them establish the code of conduct and moral development by which we abide. This kind of control over us is released when you commit to taking charge of your self-leadership path. This requires releasing where you feel most confined. Maybe assessing where you have imprisoned yourself. DOWNLOAD

Today, I am on the mic. I want to talk with you directly about self-leadership. I discuss how WeMentor Self-Leadership Mastery and share two of nine developmental stages of leadership at polar opposites of each other and how the Unitive/Ironic leadership stage and The Opportunist/The Self stage apply to small business ownership. Dr. Susanne Cook-Reuter developed the 9 Leadership Maturity Assessment known as MAP to which I refer.

A question often asked of me, is focusing on self-leadership selfish? No, self-leadership is the way out of narcissism, self-sabotage, self-loathing, and the victimization of self. Self-leadership is taking charge of your own self-development and setting yourself on a path of self-valuing so you can choose to lead with others as opposed to leading by exerting power over others.

My self-leadership journey began while in college when I became extremely uncomfortable with who I was and needed to understand my deeper feelings of unworthiness. My leadership development pace accelerated upon founding WeMentor in 1992. Business ownership is the ultimate example of self-leadership on steroids. You are catapulted into self-development whether you wanted to understand yourself or not. I encourage you to take charge of your self-leadership process. It is a great way to become who you are meant to be.

WeMentor Self-Leadership Activation Exercises

  3. Begin a daily 7-minute meditation practice of sitting quietly focusing on your breath.
  4. Extra Credit: We encourage breaking out of enmeshment and breaking free of co-dependency in relationships. We embrace standing in your own space. Own the energy circulating within yourself. Podcast Guest Mentor

Nancy Meyer. My official entrepreneurial work began as a business mentor in 1992 when I founded WeMentor, inc. This work continues to be an adventure. I am brought into thousands of entrepreneurial leaders and small business owners’ lives. They hire me to facilitate a revolutionary process to reinvent how they lead while redesigning their work culture. I get to participate in their journey as they learn new skills and deepen their understanding of their core business operations. I was born to innovate and help others achieve their dreams. I love it!

I have also had the privilege of sharing my knowledge and expertise in academic settings for 15 years. Leading a faculty research team to expand entrepreneurship education across disciplines, as an assistant professor in entrepreneurship at the University of St. Catherine, and as an adjunct professor at Saint Mary’s University developing curriculum where critical inquiry, cross-cultural studies, and interdisciplinary teaching were an integral part of the academic structure. I brought an innovative mindset and practical approach to enrich the learning environment.

To provide further access to those in remote communities and entrepreneurs everywhere, I launched WeMentor Mondays with Nancy podcast on January 25, 2016. We learn so much through meaningful conversations from our peers on the entrepreneurial journey of self-leadership mastery and life success.
