Episode 187: How WeMentor Self-Leadership, 2 of 2

I start today’s conversation by defining the phrase: WeMentor Self-Leadership Mastery. What does walking pneumonia, and now bronchitis (aargh), have to do with self-leadership development? A connection I ponder in groping with elements of mental sanity and emotional instability. Wellbeing and self-compassion vs. physical vulnerability and others’ interpretation of my experience.

I utilize research by Dr. Susanne Cook-Greuter into rare forms we reach in human development maturation. Her 9 stages of Leadership Maturity Framework help shape how I talk directly to you about entrepreneurial leadership development. Determine where you fit along the leadership developmental stages I describe. DOWNLOAD

Within WeMentor, I define self-leadership as self-influence through the use of behavioral and cognitive strategies to develop and integrate newer and deeper connections between your mind, brain, and relationships to:

  • Become acutely aware of oneself and others,
  • Solve life and leadership riddles,
  • Have a sense of play and adventure,
  • Experience an equal fascination: before, during, and after breakthrough moments,
  • Role Model Emotional Wellbeing,
  • Direct the mind, through experience, to a world that expands beyond the material,
  • Awaken to differing degrees of spiritual enlightenment, self-actualization, and strive toward the higher, rarer, stages of leadership development like The Unitive/Ironic stage, and
  • Engage in daily practices and disciplines that lead toward higher levels of leadership and mentoring maturity and self-leadership mastery.

Stage 9: Unitive/Ironic Stage of Leadership Development

Self-leadership mastery is a level of rare maturation that less than 1% of the population reach, even amongst highly educated, successful thought leaders, according to Dr. Susanne Cook-Greuter. She developed the Leadership Maturity Framework descriptive of 9 stages of leadership development I discuss in today’s podcast episode. I am on a mission to increase that percentage!

Dr. Susanne Cook-Greuter has discovered that, “People operating at the Unitive/Ironic Stage of development can be found in all professions, but often prefer to stay behind the scenes or go about their business quietly from sweeping the entryway, to facilitating a seminar to overseeing military action. They do what needs doing with great precision, compassion, wisdom. They can use tough love and be kind depending on what is required in the moment. They are not afraid to stand up for justice, to act with conviction and suffer the consequences. But they don’t do it for heroic personal needs, only for the benefit of others or to inspire others by example.

Their ego is no longer the driver for what they do. Therefore, they have little to defend and much to observe, absorb, and appreciate. In general, they are not overly interested in complex explanations and approaches, and not impressed with or seek titles, honours, and status symbols, although they may accept them graciously if bestowed. Most Unitive individuals practice regular meditation and/or are part of a spiritual discipline. They continue to develop themselves and others to embrace ever greater wisdom, mercy, and right action.”

You, as an emerging entrepreneurial leader or experienced one, can move through each stage and reshape how you lead and mentor at each level. You can also stop and linger indefinitely at each stage. You decide.

The exciting part for life learnerswhich most of us entrepreneurial types are—is to learn these stages and understand where you are at, so you consciously continue to take calculated business and personal risks to evolve yourself as you lead others. What I know for sure is wherever you are when this life journey ends, you will continue in the afterlife. You get to choose how much you want to evolve while you are here. I am committed to keep evolving. I challenge you to join me in this life journey to redesign, or evolve, yourself as you redesign your venture! Podcast Guest Mentor

Nancy Meyer. My official entrepreneurial work began as a business mentor in 1992 when I founded WeMentor, inc. This work continues to be an adventure. I am brought into thousands of entrepreneurial leaders and small business owners’ lives. They hire me to facilitate a revolutionary process to reinvent how they lead while redesigning their work culture. I get to participate in their journey as they learn new skills and deepen their understanding of their core business operations. I was born to innovate and help others achieve their dreams. I love it!

I have also had the privilege of sharing my knowledge and expertise in academic settings for 15 years. Leading a faculty research team to expand entrepreneurship education across disciplines, as an assistant professor in entrepreneurship at the University of St. Catherine, and as an adjunct professor at Saint Mary’s University developing curriculum where critical inquiry, cross-cultural studies, and interdisciplinary teaching were an integral part of the academic structure. I brought an innovative mindset and practical approach to enrich the learning environment.

To provide further access to those in remote communities and entrepreneurs everywhere, I launched WeMentor Mondays with Nancy podcast on January 25, 2016. We learn so much through meaningful conversations from our peers on the entrepreneurial journey of self-leadership mastery and life success.
