I am finding myself outraged, horrified, agitated, and grieving like you are today. Our hearts and communities were ripped apart. Life In Times Of COVID-19 took a dark turn on Memorial Day after Officer Derek Chauvin and three other police accomplices senselessly murdered George Floyd. A week of unprecedented civil unrest and rioting expanded nationally. Peaceful protests increasingly turned more and more violent as the week progressed. At least 255 businesses, as of yesterday, have been vandalized and looted in the Twin Cities; some destroyed by fire. Our business communities have boarded up their businesses to protect their properties from further destruction.
Please, sit with me to actively meditate and soften into our humanity right now. This meditation is today’s podcast. Let’s unite in our humanity and allow for our raw and tender emotions to surface in a controlled environment. Find a comfy spot and relax into a sitting position. Open your heart in a safe space. It is going to take a while to sort and assimilate all of what is going on and restore all the damage that has taken place. The steps our governors and mayors take right now to restore justice and eradicate institutional racism will help us heal or cause a deepening divide. I am confident that the actions taken by our Minnesota state leaders and in our local communities will unite us at the core of our humanity. There is hope for a much better future in Minnesota, across the nation, and around the globe. To change the trajectory into a better future, start in this moment.

Conscious Attentive Leadership Mentoring
After completing today’s meditation, do the following three WeMentor Self-Leadership Activation Exercises:
- Take this risk: Write down what you are aware of after you meditate. Allow yourself to express yourself fully, include feeling words like, I feel sadness. “I feel agitated and unsettled. I feel horrified after watching George Floyd’s murder. I feel happy that our neighborhood was safe last night. I feel frightened with the unrest.” Name them to work through them and tame them.
- The intensity of what we are going through right now is real. Stay connected to yourself. Decide on a daily practice you can do this week that will feel good and connect you in a loving and comforting way. Make sure you are physically active, too. Physical activity helps to release toxins and negative emotions, stress, and can increase your focus by providing more energy to your brain. We are operating at 20% capacity, if that, right now. Refueling and nurturing our mind, body, and spirit is a must!
- Apply Self-Compassion: Allow room in your day to be with your feelings.
- Plan ahead. You decide when and where. Meditation is something you can count on to facilitate healing, a little bit at a time. It is manageable. It can be something you look forward to, being with yourself.
- Do something enjoyable, like watching a positive historic event, the Launch America space flight that rocketed into space on Saturday. Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley, two close astronaut friends on a historic mission together, a first human ride of Falcon 9 flight.
3. Welcome Appreciation: What you can say to yourself. “I appreciate that I was able to be with my emotions and take this risk. I can control my breath and can come back to observe my breath throughout today. When I feel deep feelings of unrest and uncertainty, hurt, anger, anguish, fear, or any other emotion, I can count on my ability to focus on breathing and learn what I next need to do to take care of my mind, body, and spirit. In turn, I can better care for others and meet the needs of my business. I am hopeful.”
“I believe finally that education must be conceived as a continuing reconstruction of experience; that the process and the goal of education are one and the same thing.” – John Dewey
