Blow’s op-ed article on September 14, 2020, is grounded in reality with some ‘stop thinking’ advice about helplessness and inspiration through an invite to action. The action I think is necessary starts with soul searching about current decisions. A call to action through heart conversations. Yes, those are the kind of situations you find yourself in where your heart is screaming for you to speak up and do something! Where you can choose an expansive action that takes courage. Or an action motivated by fear-based compromise, ill intent, and attachment to specific outcomes where, in the end, diminishes who you are becoming.
I make my point using an example of where actions start with loved ones. We found a disturbing reality when Matthew and I brought our daughter, Olivia, to the University of Wisconsin-Madison a few weeks ago. A definite, wise decision will forever be that a wise solid decision that survives the test of time. I will forever reflect on the decision we made as a family, initiated by me, as a decision that empowered a change that strengthened our connection and encouraged me to do more and be more. The upside to courageous actions. Listen to find out more.
Charles Blow suggests, “Gather the energy. Gather your neighbor. Fight, vote, email, post. Please do all you can to stand up for the planet itself. Don’t let history record this moment as it had recorded too many others: a time when good people did too little to confront wickedness and disaster.” I finish this episode with an energizing meditation of mental clarity. Energize yourself to make the next best courageous decision.
Charles Blow ends his article with a couple of quotes from Edmund Burke in 1770. I added the appropriate gender acronyms to fit today’s worldview. “Thoughts on the Cause of the Present Discontents”: “When bad men/women/all genders combine, the good must associate; else they will fall, one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle. The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men/women/all genders to do nothing.” Just as evil characters have a natural tendency to congregate to create chaos through fear and rage, so must we with the opposite intention and unite together to form a more perfect union.

Conscious Attentive Leadership Mentoring
After listening, do the following three WeMentor C.A.L.M. Exercises:
- Take this risk: You can start by asking yourself, what am I role modeling? Am I entering into heart conversations? Courage builds on itself with one decision after the next decision, and so on. Expand outward in your business and society. Take one of Charles Blow’s suggestions.
- Apply Self-Compassion: After you meditate with me, utilize the energy you generated and find a friend to support you as you decide which courageous acts you desire taking right now.
- Welcome Appreciation: Say to yourself, “I am grateful to expand the energy I generated to do good in the world and make a courageous decision right now. Our society needs me, I am grateful to serve in whatever capacity is necessary. I can work through fear. I am becoming my next best self.”
“I believe finally, that education must be conceived as a continuing reconstruction of experience; that the process and the goal of education are one and the same thing.” – John Dewey
