Episode Notes
Scott Welle role models what he writes, speaks, and teaches. He just published his 10th book, Outperform The Norm: Daily Execution. Extraordinary Results. Scott is here to cultivate connections between our daily execution and realizing big aspirations, highlighting how the Norm thinks and the Outperformers function.
Outperform The Norm: Daily Execution. Extraordinary Results contains ten principles that explain an Outperformers strategy of goal setting, the execution of goal achievement, and the psychology of aspiring to big things. We focus on the mental game and improving daily strategies to Outperform. The little things matter in our daily activities, and they can add up to significant results done with mindful intent and applying Scott’s ten principles.
Scott has a master’s degree in Sports Psychology and enjoys pushing his own physical and mental limits. He has completed 5 Ironman triathlons, 29 marathons, and a 100-mile ultra-marathon run. The proof is in the O.P.P. Framework. We go into the ins and outs of Outcome goals, Process goals, and Performance goals to offer practical strategies for improving our daily output.
I have been following Scott via his weekly emails since I first heard him speak at the Optimist’s Club and at the Small Emerging Growth Companies organization a few years later. In 2017, Scott was one of our podcast Guest Mentors. We focused on two of Scott’s books at that time. His 1st book, Welleness, and his 9th book Outperform The Norm. We talked about adopting an attitude of gratitude and key phrases and words that retrain our minds from having 78% negative daily thoughts to positive thinking, being, and doing.
Outperform The Norm: Daily Execution. Extraordinary Results is laid out in three sections. The mental game of goals, goal-setting strategies, and excellence in execution. We start with updates from 2017 and Scott’s beliefs for the first 20 years of his life. This is an example of how crippling comparison can be, and Scott’s power of awareness transformed self-defeating, self-limiting, and self-sabotaging beliefs to become the Outperformer he is today, inspiring us to harness the tremendous potential within (body, mind, and spirit).
Other Conversation Highlights:
- The formula for water intake.
- Scott says to tear up your daily to-do list and replace it with a strategic-priorities list. Shocker!
- Long COVID and its effect on Outperformers.
- The age by which our personality is formed.
- Our minds give out before the body. How to work with your mind.
- #1 Outperformer Principle: Own It. Are you partially interested (the Norm) or fully Committed (the Outperformer)?
- Process goal strategy: focused attention on things that matter and things you can control.
- 4 Musts in Setting Process Goals.
I am applying Scott’s ten principles and daily strategies as I aspire to publish my book. I would love to hear how our conversation affects you. Contact me HERE. DOWNLOAD
“Any goal is realistic with an intelligent plan to accomplish it.” — Scott Welle.
My Reflection
In pondering the concept of Outperforming the Norm, I asked myself. How does this concept jive with my compassionate desire for all beings everywhere to be happy, peaceful, and free? Being happy, peaceful, and free requires us to set goals and have aspirations beyond ourselves. This, in turn, challenges us to live our lives with integrity. To live with integrity, we need to develop and evolve our minds, bodies, and souls by practicing healthy relating and doing the lifework we are called to do.
A second question emerged, does the Norm live with integrity and develop and evolve their minds, bodies, and souls? Or, do they fight their internal evolution and stand firm in creating a narrative that keeps them small? I feel the concept of Outperforming the Norm is ultimately about becoming your best self. Our best self needs to differentiate between the thinking that keeps us small and the mindset that propels us to excel and evolve. Eventually, to live with joy, peace, and harmony within and in union with our connection to the outside world.
This is why I am focused on having meaningful conversations. They provoke the pondering we need to attune our actions with our values and release what no longer serves us. I am so appreciative of this thought-provoking conversation with Scott. I hope you do your own pondering.
One last thought. I suggest purchasing the softcover book instead of or in addition to an e-book version. I have both. I have found the paperback easier to design an intelligent plan because I jump around the chapters to own it, live it, love it, and excel at its execution.

Conscious Attentive Leadership Mentoring
After listening, do these three C.A.L.M. Activities:
- Take this risk or do this adventurous task: We learned from Scott that Outperformers see accountability as a strength, not a weakness. Try a new method of accountability. Replace your to-do list with a short strategic-priorities list each day. Play around with it.
Strategic priorities are key values that guide your work in your ‘must-do,’ ‘should-do,’ or ‘nice-to-do’ categories. For example, clients are my focus. They have suggested that I write a book for years about redefining how you lead as you redesign your business. I am motivated to give them what they want and need. I proclaimed I would finish this book and am using Scott’s 10 principles to develop an intelligent plan to get it done. So, my daily ‘must-do’ strategy is to invest two hours each day in producing book content and editing the content on Saturdays. Your turn.
- Apply Self-Compassion: Once you have your strategic-priorities list, sit quietly cross-legged or on a chair in a posture that relaxes your mind. Close your eyes and breathe slowly for three counts in and four out a few times before returning to your normal breathing. Become aware of your body’s sensations. Form a kind intention to allow your key values to guide your strategic-priorities. Ask yourself, what do I value about this goal or aspiration I am making it a priority to achieve? Continue breathing for a few more minutes before slowly opening your eyes. Then, write down what you become aware of.
- Welcome Appreciation: “I appreciate Scott’s outperforming commitment and approach in life. I appreciate what I keep learning from him about being an Outperformer. He always shares valuable lessons that improve my leadership and life, from water intake to practical daily tips on mindset to ripping up my to-do list and replacing it with strategic priorities. I appreciate who Scott is and his commitment to his lifework.”
Your Turn. Start with, “I appreciate what I heard from today’s Guest Mentor, Scott Welle. I appreciate this week’s adventurous task because….”
“Most of the problems in our lives and world are caused by relational dysfunction, a dysfunction in how we relate: as social groups, as individuals, to animals and the environment, and even to ourselves. Therefore, developing relational literacy—the understanding of and ability to practice healthy ways of relating—is essential for personal, social, and ecological transformation.” —Melanie Joy, psychologist, author, theorist, educator
