Episode 324: How Filmmaking and Entrepreneurship Merged for Koura Linda

Episode Notes

Doing all the parts to make a film by Day Playing is one thing. Making a living through filmmaking is quite another. Koura Linda describes her journey starting Space Dream Productions in 2013 and Spaceship Shipton marrying into the business. A humorous quip they exchange with each other. We also get Koura’s insights into managing cash flow, time management resources, common skills between filmmakers and entrepreneurs, and her aspirations. Plus, a unique offering for you.

When your business and life mission are interconnected, great things can happen. Koura gives some salacious details about 50+ projects and 49 award nominations. Thirty of the 50 projects are complete, like the films Gone Cray, Dual Flush, Mark and The Martian, and Mark and Dot. Twenty of the 50 are in the works, including the feature film Comic Relief, Catching The Light, and Tuesday Mourning. Four full-time employees, an intern, four partners, and independent contractors (Day Players) keep Space Dream Productions cranking out projects and films.

To clarify, “Space Dream Films is a part of Space Dream Productions, an independent film and music production company grounded in the idea that all storytellers are ambassadors of humanity, tasked with sharing our voices. Filmmakers have the added responsibility of creating visual worlds around these stories. For this reason, Space Dream Productions’ focus is on films that entertain and aim to showcase pieces of humanity.”

The Film Fund’s list of 10 reasons filmmaking and entrepreneurship require the same skills provided an enlightening debate about which skills are more fitting than others. Number two prompted a more extended discussion that resonated with both of us. How films get priced and how crippling the process reminds me of the challenges we all face in valuing our work and paying fair wages when there is what Koura describes as an absolute crippling madness around pricing films.

You can use the list below to follow along and see which skills fit from your perspective. Please email your thoughts to nancy@wementor.com.

The Film Fund’s List of 10 Reasons Filmmaking and Entrepreneurship Require the Same Skills

  1. Concepts are nothing without proper execution. Are you a take-charge person who makes things happen?
  2. Films and start-ups both offer a value proposition. Koura has a deep contention with how films get priced that you will find relatable.
  3. At a fundamental level, entrepreneurs must provide value; so must entertainers and storytellers. Consumers need to believe in the product offered, the film, the sandwich, and whatever they consume.
  4. Filmmakers must also understand digital marketing and community management. Koura says NO. Find out why.
  5. Short films represent entertainment funding MVPs (minimum viable products). Koura explains how short films are a multitude of things that tie in our #2 skill, offering a value proposition.
  6. Filmmakers and entrepreneurs wear multiple hats. We debate what that means and the difference between the responsibilities of a producer and director.

*See where you stand with the last four commonalities linking entrepreneurs and filmmakers.

  1. They both experience imposter syndrome.
  2. They must both know basic accounting, finance, and tax laws.
  3. They must understand intellectual property law.
  4. Filmmakers and entrepreneurs have big dreams.

Conscious Attentive Leadership Mentoring

After listening, do these three C.A.L.M. Activities:

  1. Take this risk or do this adventurous task: The Film Fund’s list of 10 reasons filmmaking and entrepreneurship require the same skills provided an enlightening debate about which skills are more fitting than others. Based on our conversation, what skills fit your perspective? Please email your thoughts to nancy@wementor.com.
  1. Apply Self-Compassion: Notice one feeling you feel right now. Answer this question, what thought was going through your mind just before you noticed that feeling? Identify how you feel after that particular thought. As a self-inquiry exercise, randomly observe your thoughts throughout the day. No need to change anything; just notice and observe.
  1. Welcome Appreciation: “I appreciate Koura. I appreciate Koura’s imagination, business savviness, and brilliance. I appreciate her integrity and all the other things I appreciated about her in our 1st conversation. Her openness and curiosity as we engaged fully in our conversation. I appreciate the genuine joy Koura exudes in helping other business owners and filmmakers succeed in their careers. I appreciate our time together creating a meaningful conversation I am excited to share with others. I appreciate how she can capture our humanity through writing and her filmmaking lens.”

Your Turn. Start with, “I appreciate what I heard from today’s Guest Mentor, Koura Linda. I appreciate this week’s adventurous task because….”

“Most of the problems in our lives and world are caused by relational dysfunction, a dysfunction in how we relate: as social groups, as individuals, to animals and the environment, and even to ourselves. Therefore, developing relational literacy—the understanding of and ability to practice healthy ways of relating—is essential for personal, social, and ecological transformation.” —Melanie Joy, psychologist, author, theorist, educator

Koura Linda

Koura Linda is an Independent Filmmaker and Entrepreneur. As a Writer/Producer/Director, Koura founded Space Dream Productions in 2013, releasing her first major film project in 2016 with her husband, Spaceship, a Musician and Filmmaker.

Space Dream Productions is an independent film and music production company grounded in the idea that storytellers are ambassadors of humanity, tasked with sharing pieces of themselves with each other.  Filmmakers have the added responsibility of creating visual worlds around these stories. For this reason, Koura and Spaceship focus on films that entertain and aim to showcase pieces of humanity—all pieces of humanity—not just “edgy” indie or simply uplifting but everything in between.

The mission of Space Dream Productions is to amplify genuine pieces of life that may not always be front and center in large studio projects and to elevate hard-working exceptional artists in music and film.

Since September 2016, over 50 projects have moved (or are moving) through Space Dream Productions. About 30 completed projects have received over 50 film festival acceptances internationally. They have earned 80 award nominations and 31 awards, including “Best Director” (awarded to both Koura Linda and Spaceship for three different films), “Best Animation,” “Best Drama: Short,” and “Best Short,” and “Best Picture.”

In 2019, Koura was awarded the Mico Award for courage, innovation, and excellence in a film career, and she works to mentor other filmmakers through her podcast, Filmmaking [actually].

Koura & Spaceship are known for HitRECord on TV (2014-2015), Names On The Wall (2016), Bringer of War (2017), Spoons & ME (2018), Mark & The Martian (2019), Tidings (2020), Dual Flush (2021) and Gone Gray (2022). Films coming soon include Catching the Light, Comic Relief, In Her Self, an Untitled Holocaust Documentary, and To Catch the Light.

A complete list of current festival selections and upcoming screenings is available on their Film Festivals page. An extensive list of laurels can be found on the Accolades page.
