“PTSD is an anxiety disorder that a person may develop after experiencing or witnessing an extreme, overwhelming traumatic event during which they felt intense fear, helplessness, or horror.” (1) Flashbacks replay the traumatic event as if it is happening in real time. Your body remembers the event. I was running to get help after my brother’s tractor flipped over on him when he was 16 years old and I was 14 years old. Years later when I would go for a run, my nervous system reacted before my brain knew what was going on. Neuroception is a subconscious system for detecting threats and safety. (2) The event replayed in my head like the threat was real. I needed to learn how to reassure myself I was safe, and actively bring myself back into the present moment.

Here is part of an article published earlier this year by Kendra Cherry explaining neuroplasticity. “Brain plasticity, also known as neuroplasticity, is a term that refers to the brain’s ability to change and adapt as a result of experience. When people say that the brain possesses plasticity, they are not suggesting that the brain is similar to plastic. Neuro represents neurons, the nerve cells that are the building blocks of the brain and nervous system, and plasticity refers to the brain’s malleability.

Up until the 1960s, researchers believed that changes in the brain could only take place during infancy and childhood. By early adulthood, it was believed that the brain’s physical structure was mostly permanent.

Modern research has demonstrated that the brain continues to create new neural pathways and alter existing ones in order to adapt to new experiences, learn new information and create new memories.” (3)

“Co-dependency is an emotional, psychological, and behavioral condition that develops as a result of an individual’s prolonged exposure to, and practice of, a set of oppressive rules–rules which prevent the open expression of feeling as well as the direct discussion of personal and interpersonal problems.”(4)
