Episode 120: Alone yet Together, Joule’s Micro Nation

Jackie Menne is building a Joule Microbusiness Nation of MB2MB events, publications, and educational programming. There are over 28 million small businesses in the United States. Out of the 28M small businesses, 22M are micros (refer to mentoring resources below). Micros are businesses owned and operated by one person, a solopreneur.

According to Jackie, the 22M in 2017 number I found in my research is fast approaching 27M micros. Rapidly, we are becoming a 5o% independent workforce. “It is going to get larger not smaller,” says Jackie. How is the younger generation preparing for self-sufficiency in managing their own careers? What does Jackie tell her grandchildren to prepare them for their future careers? Find out other tips she offers for the younger generation. Click Here

Jackie’s Beginnings. Jackie grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. In High School she learned a profound writing lesson. Just because someone doesn’t think you are a great writer doesn’t mean everyone does. What experiment led to the lesson of objectivity and subjectivity?

Jackie landed a great copywriter position and left college to write commercials and sometimes news stories. She has never looked back. Her life journey led to a Minnesota move with her husband. They raised two boys, now grown. She eventually made her way from CBS and ABC into advertising and then out on her own.

She founded Joule Coworking space in 2000. One of the first in this emerging metro market. “Micros are concerned about their business and not about themselves,” Jackie says. A coworking space helped break the isolation, made the drag of getting new business more fun, and created a space for support. Learn how coworking is changing. What happened to her space? How did her life change?

Jackie’s energy, wisdom, and enthusiasm about life and how she helps micros will inspire your day. To attend one of her upcoming events click on her website below.

Podcast Guest Mentor

Jackie Menne. Lived in Minnesota long enough to call it home, yet still a transplant from Cincinnati. Landed her dream job right out of school as a writer, actually copywriter for a hit radio station that played them (hits) and brought in the stars who sang them. Met most. Struck an empathetic chord.

Moved into television and then actually moved…to Minnesota. Lasted a few years at CBS and ABC then found the wonderful world of advertising.

Worked for big companies, big brands and big shots. Retail giants. Consumer goods. Music industry.

Became a Boat rocker. Crusader. Realist.

Got close to the top of the ladder but stepped down. Not afraid of heights, tired of the view. Left to become a master juggler and wearer of hats. Ran small agencies. Climbed step-stools. Finally, back on the ground to write and create Synergy Advertising. A microbiz. Later Joule, a place for microbiz. Now MB2MB a publication about microbiz.

Still a Boat Rocker. Crusader. Realist. And now an Advocate—for Micros.
