Annette has been in business since 1995. She started out with chair massage at Calhoun Square in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Prince wrote a song entitled, Calhoun Square.
Before starting The Great Metropolitan Backrub, Annette was living in poverty and raising two small children as a single Mom. Annette is college educated and grew-up in an entrepreneurial environment and around wealthy people. Her parents ran two frame stores. She knew she could find her way out of poverty through business ownership. Download
Annette joined one of my peer mentoring groups in 1998 where she wrote her first business plan. Got a $36,000 business loan and took the feedback from fellow peer mentors over a three-year period and grew to owning two stores. A different path than her parents. The same entrepreneurial spirit and tenacity to never give up.
We talk about the healthcare industry and how allopathic medicine hasn’t made us better. Synthetic pharmaceuticals are very dangerous. Pills aren’t fixing us. Using our inner wisdom can. Annette says, “Massage helps people get to know their body in ways they haven’t before.”We discuss her journey through 2005. Next week we will continue our conversation to present time.

The Massage Therapy Profession
- Research estimates that massage therapy was a $16 billion industry in the country in 2017.
- By comparison, in 2005, massage therapy was projected to be a $6 to $11 billion a year industry.
- It is estimated that there are 335,000 to 385,000 massage therapists and massage school students in the United States.
- From 2012 to 2017, revenue from alternative/complementary healthcare providers, which includes massage therapists, increased 4 percent, and employment increased 3.3 percent. Revenue growth is projected to continue at an average rate of 4 percent per year through 2022.
- Between July 2016 and July 2017, surveys indicate that roughly 47.1 – 59.5 million adult Americans (19 – 24 percent) had a massage at least once. The Massage Therapy Profession
