Episode 156: Musings from Teen Pop Rocker

Born in the Republic of Congo, Bob Kabeya moved to America when he was 8-years-old. He recalls his harrowing three-day journey with his Mom and three brothers to reunite with his Dad in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They were apart for three years.

You know his Dad, Mike Kabeya, who has been working with me since 2016, when we started this podcast. He joins us on the mic. His Mom, Sylvie had clever ways for the family to stay hopeful. (Sylvie Kabeya’s podcast episode is included in the Mentoring Resources.)

Early fond memories emerge for Bob of church choirs, both parents sing and play instruments; and acting in a commercial before turning 2-years-old. A local star in the making. Playing soccer barefooted for three days, his first guitar lessons, and other musings not as pleasant of his early years. Saying good-bye to Kinshasa and the Republic of Congo, possibly forever.

Now 18 years old, Bob attends college studying journalism, works with his Dad at Kabeya Media, and performs with his band project Miloe. Band members include: Theo Galetka on drums, Dom Winterbaure on bass, and Thomas Schroeder on lead guitar. Bob is on vocals and rhythm guitar. He also plays drums and other instruments. They perform at coffee shops and other pop events. His first Digital album was released in 2018, Miloe EP, a hypnotic grouping of eight tracks.

Bob’s next performance with project Miloe is on January 26, 2019, 7:10 p.m., at Caydence Records and Coffee, St. Paul, MN (est. in 2016).

Review of Bob’s first 8 track Digital Album: project Miloe EP

“Miloe is the extremely chill indie pop project of Bob Kabeya, and this is his debut EP. Described as “sad boi music for all your events and occasions,” it is a hypnotizing, translucent collection of tracks. Most of the songs are built on simple guitar and synth loops, but there is intense beauty in the minutiae. Kabeya’s light tenor is like a sun shower on a summer day. I can’t wait to hear more from project Miloe in the future.” Ear Coffee Blogspot

Mentoring Tips

After listening, complete the following exercises.

  1. Have a meaningful conversation each day this week. Get beyond selling yourself and connect on a deeper level. One conversation starter is to ask, what inspires happiness in your life? Start with answering that question for yourself.
    • For me, it is hearing my husband and our daughter playfully teasing each other. Lots of laughter.
    • Another one for me, listening to each edited version of a taped mentoring conversation. I look forward to every episode even when we discuss tough topics. I find happiness in meaningful conversations where we connect, are courageous, and compassionate in sharing our life journeys. It nourishes my soul!
  2. Help us enrich 2019 program offerings, give a donation today! We appreciate your generosity and will use your donations wisely. PayPal
