Episode 230: Life In Times Of COVID-19, Part VI

“Successful hedge fund manager, Joel Salomon weathered some of the toughest financial times in recent memory. He consistently generated positive returns, even in 2008, when the stock market dropped almost 40%. He achieved this remarkable record by applying mindful money management principles” (excerpt from his website). We talk about his life and both of his books, Mindful Money management: Memoirs of a Hedge Fund Manager and 9 Money Rules Millionaires Use: Only The Unconventional Ones. DOWNLOAD

#1 Money Rule: When you believe. Joel talks about two life changing events at age 14 that ignited his fear-based mindset and mistrust in humans. Outcomes of that mindset brought more shady characters into his life. You will hear what shifted in his life and how he got on the path to mindful money management and creating a loving and caring environment trusting humans. We discuss money memories that develop a poverty consciousness and money memories that can reinforce an abundance mindset. You will answer two questions, am I asking far too little of myself and too little of humanity? How do I choose faith over fear?

You will chuckle and nod your head in familiarity (yes, this has happened to me), when you hear the results of when Joel has ignored his intuition. Joel’s #2 rule in managing money is trusting your intuition. Get a few tips on how to sharpen your intuitive decision making.

Join Joel and I at the end of our conversation as we do a 3-minute meditation. Find out the meditation APP that Joel uses for his daily 20-minute meditation practice.

Joel’s take on what we are living through right now with the coronavirus pandemic and the reckoning of institutional racism in America is this. “From bad things, good things can come with better outcomes. From really terrible things, really awesome great change comes.” Change is a coming!

Conscious Attentive Leadership Mentoring

After listening, do the following three C.A.L.M. Exercises:

1. Take this risk: The evolution toward equality for all humans, requires the understanding of our history and changing poverty consciousness to an abundance mindset.

  • Prepare for the Juneteenth holiday on Friday, June 19th. Click here to revisit that historic day of The Emancipation Proclamation (June 19, 1865). We cannot change what we do not acknowledge.
  • Purchase Joel’s books.
  • You can also listen to Krista Tippet and Eula Bis, Talking About Whiteness, On Being podcast.
  • Think about the rules, policies, and procedures in your business: as a solopreneur, as a business partner, as a CEO/Principal, as a multi-venture entrepreneur, as a family-owned business owner or, as a franchise owner/operation. Next, re-examine the rules, policies, and procedures in your business. Ask yourself, where does white privilege live in this organization/company?
  • Build on the answer above by answering, what consciousness or mindset am I (or are we) promoting? Are all voices being heard who are affected by our rules, policies, and procedures? How can all of us prosper in this business? How can I reconstruct our financial model to reflect our belief in humanity? How can we all win?

2. Apply Self-Compassion: Write down your feelings and notice what you are becoming aware of as you learn more about our history, whiteness, and figure out how you can dismantle American racism. What deep, dark emotions can I learn from and release today?

3. Welcome Appreciation: Here is what I am saying to myself. “I am awakened at a new level of my white privilege. I feel sickened at how this white privilege has manifested in our country since 1619. I am encouraged that collectively, we can move from an institutionally based racist American culture to a liberated equality-based mindset attuned with an abundant and prosperity consciousness. As I prosper in life and in business, I teach others to prosper. I will continue to do my part to dismantle racism in my psyche and participate in the revolution of this country!” What are you saying to yourself?

“I believe finally that education must be conceived as a continuing reconstruction of experience; that the process and the goal of education are one and the same thing.”           – John Dewey
