Episode 235: Trahern’s Practical Solutions to Create Systemic Change

I would like first to acknowledge the passing of one of the original Freedom Riders, chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, the youngest speaker at the March on Washington, leader of the march from Selma to Montgomery, and served as a member of Congress in Georgia for 33 years, John Lewis. In an excerpt from Past President Barack Obama’s condolence statement, he wrote, “Not many of us get to live to see our legacy play out in such a meaningful, remarkable way. John Lewis did. And thanks to him, we now all have our marching orders — to keep believing in the possibility of remaking this country we love until it lives up to its full promise.”

Today’s podcast guest mentor, Trayhern Pollard has his marching orders that he says, “was placed on his heart.” Trahern founded We Push For Peace over a decade ago to be a resource and advocate for inner-city youth. His organization is responsive to youth in crisis and organizes resources to address the uptick in violence. In the struggle for racial justice, Trahern spoke with protestors to press upon the need to fulfill the principles of nonviolent resistance and use civil disobedience to bring about change, not violence. Trahern played a crucial role in the history-making events in Minneapolis after George Floyd’s murder on May 25, 2020. We discuss life in the Twin Cities since that tragic day, and the platform set to make massive changes.

We also discuss practical solutions to create systemic change:

  • A Minneapolis example of where systemic racism starts.
  • The consequences of the divide and conquer mentality.
  • When core values of “intelligence, dignity, and integrity are trampled on regularly, is it a surprise that we get what we got?” asks Trahern. The increase in senseless black-on-black crime, over 170 shootings and over five murders, and why this is happening. What did Trayhern do after the shootings?
  • Accountability in our legal system.
  • Policing reform ideas.
  • Why are interventions necessary, and why does consistency need to be maintained?
  • The loss of Trahern’s 20-year-old son, Xavier, and how Trahern works through his grief.
  • How Trenton, Trahern’s other son, is participating in We Push For Peace.
  • Lessons from Trahern’s Grandfather about racism.
  • Bridging gaps, platforms for dialogue, dealing with inhouse issues, community building.
  • Policing differently. Working with Minneapolis Police Chief, Medaria Arradondo, on Hot Spots.
  • Employment for youth.
  • Getting funding to nonprofits doing the work to build up the communities.

Trahern is accepting donations for providing meals and hiring youth to keep things peaceful and safe. Help a brother out!

Conscious Attentive Leadership Mentoring

After listening, do the following three WeMentor C.A.L.M. Exercises:

  1. Take this risk: DONATE HERE Make a list of your ideas to reform the police department in your community. Submit your ideas to local City Council members. If you have another idea, go with that idea and take action on it right now.
  2. Apply Self-Compassion: Taking deliberate action to participate in the remaking of this country is empowering. I felt so empowered after inviting Trahern to be a guest mentor. I was energized to take the next step, call two more people to discuss what community ownership means. Your turn, acknowledge yourself for the step you have taken to share your reform ideas.
  3. Welcome Appreciation: For a second week, “I am grateful for Trahern’s courage and dedication to give a helping hand as We Push For Peace in Minneapolis and St. Paul. I am grateful for the groups of men he organizes to keep our youth safe on the weekends. I am grateful for his efforts to prepare our impoverished youth for work and for giving them practical skills and resources to get them to their new place of employment. I am grateful for Trahern’s leadership and his organizing ability to bring local leaders together to address each crisis that arises. Thank you, Trahern, for rising to align your life purpose with your heart’s passion.”

“I believe finally, that education must be conceived as a continuing reconstruction of experience; that the process and the goal of education are one and the same thing.” – John Dewey

Trahern Pollard. Trahern started his nonprofit organization, We Push for Peace in 2010, to be a resource and advocate those in the inner city.  On a broader scale, their mission is in the name of the organization, “We Push for Peace.”  When there is an injustice in our community that is seen, we need to be able to step up, lead the way, and help facilitate the change that is needed.

On May 25, 2020, a man by the name of George Floyd, died, in the hands of the Minneapolis police department. We, as a community, we as human beings, cannot un-see the horrific images.  However, what we can do is peacefully, go after justice, accountability, and the proper change that is needed so that these events stop happening.

Along with continuously helping families that have been affected by COVID-19, we focus our efforts on getting the justice our community needs at this critical time.  Trahern is holding rallies; engaging the public to hear all voices; working with leaders in our community, organizing the community to provide safety for our youth on weekends. Justice and accountability must prevail.

If you would like to support, be a part of this cause, we are a 501c3 functioning nonprofit that is continuously thriving to make a difference in all areas of the community, and anything donated would be much appreciated.  Upon your donation, you will receive a tax receipt for your records.

Donate Here  Money raised will further efforts to help those in poverty get a helping hand up in the Twin Cities.
