Episode 297: Reimagine Your Craft with “The Amazing Hondo”

Quiet desperation lingered after all of his performances in 2020 were canceled. “The Amazing Hondo” poured his emotions into his craft of magic to creatively address this new online avenue. Private parties and online magic performances became the new hybrid forms of edutainment. “The Amazing Hondo” is back!!!

Our podcast conversation highlights three parts of “The Amazing Hondo’s” life. Each part complimented a reimagining of self, expanding his repertoire and retooling his five profit centers (speaker, edutainer, emcee, auctioneer, and mentalist).

The first part of his life was like “pulling off a giant card trick,” he says; could he do it? Could he entertain and educate? Yes, check that box off.

Let’s Make A Deal, a variety television show with Monty Hall on CBS, was a family favorite. “The Amazing Hondo” has a suggestion to increase the odds of picking the best one of three doors if you are ever a contestant on the newer version of the show hosted by Wayne Brady. The first episode aired in 1963.

Part two of his life was moving out of agony and grief. Three family members died in five years. The epiphany came when he focused less on himself and more on clients, the audience, redefining his purpose as a performer and presenter. He knew he was good enough and could get applause. His job, in the end, is to make the event planner happy. If the event planner is happy, the sponsor of the event will be happy. If the sponsor is happy, the audience will be happy. During these times of polarity, “The Amazing Hondo” maintains attention on entertaining and not on differences or certain viewpoints.

This third part of “The Amazing Hondo’s” life is about adapting to new ways of delivering his famous programs: math-a-magic, magic with a message, magical study mode, and the close-up. Building out his video library is also a focus. Stump your family and friends with this card trick video he released on Halloween.

A regret early in his career is now an opportunity to add a person to his solo practice. Please comb through your database and recommend an agent and event booker to “The Amazing Hondo,” if you know one. He would greatly appreciate it.

I found myself enchanted with the fascinating life of “The Amazing Hondo.” At the end of our conversation, you can join in and see if you are in the 90% of people who get the same answer as me with a sequence of addition of numbers, colors, and countries. DOWNLOAD

Conscious Attentive Leadership Mentoring

After listening, do the following three C.A.L.M. Activities:

  1. Take this risk or do this adventurous task: Increase your imagination. Create a list of fun and enjoyable ways or activities to your life and relationships. Invite the recipient of fun to add their ideas into the mix. Between now and the end of the year, implement your ideas one day or week at a time.
  1. Apply Self-Compassion: If you have found yourself in quiet desperation, sit quietly and ask yourself or your spirit what would calm this feeling of desperation. Await an answer. Use your imagination in how you move out of this meditation and respond to what you learn.
  1. Welcome Appreciation: “I appreciate the shared wisdom of “The Amazing Hondo.” I appreciate his lifelong commitment to learning and his imaginative way of delighting audiences of all ages. I appreciate Hondo’s ability to take risks to implement new online programs. I appreciated all three of our podcast conversations. I appreciate “The Amazing Hondo!”

Your Turn. Start with, “I appreciate what I heard from today’s Guest Mentor, “The Amazing Hondo.” I appreciate this week’s adventurous task because….”

“Most of the problems in our lives and world are caused by relational dysfunction, a dysfunction in how we relate: as social groups, as individuals, to animals and the environment, and even to ourselves. Therefore, developing relational literacy—the understanding of and ability to practice healthy ways of relating—is essential for personal, social, and ecological transformation.” —Melanie Joy, psychologist, author, theorist, educator

Podcast Guest Mentor

“The Amazing Hondo,” creator of “Magic with a Message,” is a sought-after speaker, entertainer, emcee, and auctioneer. His engaging, personalized, humor-filled presentations have inspired and captivated worldwide audiences for three decades, primarily in the business, educational, sporting, and non-profit sectors.

Hailing from St. Paul, MN, Hondo graduated with honors from Winona State University. He later taught math at his alma mater Cretin-Derham Hall, where Hall-of-Famer Paul Molitor and MN Twins MVP catcher Joe Mauer were also educated.

Hondo discovered in the classroom that students learn more (and more quickly) when they’re captivated and having fun. Boredom has no place in the classroom nor at your next meeting or conference. Today, Hondo is still that profound professor, and your audience is his classroom. Hondo shines a light on ‘your magic’ by wrapping a meaningful message around ‘his magic.’ Hondo will hold them in the ‘palm of his hand’ while inspiring them to greater ‘heights of wonder.’

Hondo believes that we are all magicians, providing amazement to those we serve. We do that by believing in and trusting one another, staying true to our FUN-da-Mentals, and exceeding expectations.

Hondo lives to make his performances at meetings and events more fun and memorable.
