Episode 300: Preparedness with Disaster Expert Cathy Hockert

Episode Notes

Cathy Hockert of CH Consulting Group spoke to us in early March of 2020, before we knew COVID-19 had reached pandemic proportions. Her advice for business owners on preparedness and continuity planning was spot on and relevant as we worked our way through the last 18 months with this infectious disease. What is next? Dang, another variant, Omicron.

Today Cathy reflects on the last 18 months and gives advice for preparing our businesses for what is to come. There are some insights Cathy discovered when comparing the coronavirus pandemic to the Spanish flu outbreak of 1918. Psychologically, her findings provide us with understanding as we explore different paths forward.

Other aspects in our conversation worth hearing:

  • Working through covid fatigue and understanding our new normal.
  • Reaching the edges of her own fatigue, Cathy practices self-care.
  • Preparedness starts with gathering factual and credible information from trusted sources like the World Health Organization, the Center for Disease Control, and the MN Department of Health (a nationally respected outlet for health information).
  • Supply chain disruptions to employee shortages. How business leaders need to think differently.
  • Continuity Planning and Emergency Management plans for 2022 need flexibility and adaptability; find out why.
  • What Cathy is looking forward to in 2022. DOWNLOAD

Conscious Attentive Leadership Mentoring

After listening, do the following three C.A.L.M. Activities:
  1. Take this risk or do this adventurous task: Revisit your learnings from these past 18 months. Use what you have learned to put a continuity plan and emergency management plan in place for 2022. Use Cathy’s advice to make your plans flexible and adaptable.
  1. Apply Self-Compassion: While you plan, notice your breath. Does your breath change when you wonder how you will pay for these continuity and emergency management plans? Always know, you can bring yourself into the present moment focus on your breath to allow space in-between the slow inhales and exhales for your feelings.
  1. Welcome Appreciation: “I appreciate Cathy’s generosity in helping us through this infectious disease pandemic. I appreciate Cathy’s self-care practice. I appreciate her advice on continuity and emergency planning. I appreciate her sense of humor and optimistic outlook.”

Your Turn. Start with, “I appreciate what I heard from today’s Guest Mentor, Cathy Hockert. I appreciate this week’s adventurous task because….”

“Most of the problems in our lives and world are caused by relational dysfunction, a dysfunction in how we relate: as social groups, as individuals, to animals and the environment, and even to ourselves. Therefore, developing relational literacy—the understanding of and ability to practice healthy ways of relating—is essential for personal, social, and ecological transformation.” —Melanie Joy, psychologist, author, theorist, educator
