Episode 307: 4 More Business Junk Drawers to Organize with Sarah Becker

Episode Notes

The Process Ninja, Sarah Becker, is back, adding four more business junk drawers to organize. Yes, we have seven total business junk drawers that cause us stress and need our thoughtful attention. Crisis-to-crisis leadership is the consequence of ignoring or not taking charge of these business junk drawers. Severe criticism can accompany our lack of astuteness, along with added pressure and disgruntled co-workers and employees.

Here is an incentive to take charge of your business junk drawers. What if addressing four more business junk drawers reduced errors and increased profit margins, plus provided you the time to scale your business with greater peace of mind and confidence? What if your employees could cut their jobs from 40 hours a week to 20 hours like Sarah did when she worked at Target Corporation for six years before founding Clear Simple Business, LLC in 2016? Surprising outcomes can be discovered when you take charge of your business junk drawers.

Sarah also started a family as she became a new business owner. That takes a level of organizational fortitude begetting a Process Ninja title. Cody is now 8 years old, and Hannah is 6. They both love hockey, like their parents. I appreciate how Sarah works her schedule and gets virtual assistance (Angie Glotzbach) to keep on top of her business junk drawers.

I start with a brief review of the first three business junk drawers: financial anything, customer service issues, and quality assurance. We then add four more business junk drawers listed below. These take a little longer to describe but are worth hearing the Process Ninja’s investigative explanation and solutions to manage them.

  1. Tasks Simply Not Getting Done – things fall back into the business owner’s lap. Great ideas in a meeting, and no one takes ownership of moving the ball forward.
  1. Odds and Ends Tasks. Do projects end up back in your lap? We have all had this happen, especially if someone leaves the company. What do you do with reports, say 50 reports in which 8 of them are being used? Great ideas here about delegating and assessing workflow processes and expectations.
  1. Email Clutter. We all have it. Get strategies to gain control of your inbox and ideas for project management.
  1. Personal Items into Business: This involves prioritizing your needs first and working through ‘unrealistic sense of urgency’ projects. Can you identify the unseen norms you have in your business? Make them visible. DOWNLOAD

Conscious Attentive Leadership Mentoring

After listening, do these three C.A.L.M. Activities:
  1. Take this risk or do this adventurous task: Schedule a time to start with tasks simply not getting done, business junk drawer. Schedule a one-hour block of time for each of the other three business junk drawers. One per week could be more doable than tackling them all at once. During the one-hour self-session, jot down, for example, tasks not getting done. Decide who could help you stay on top of this business junk drawer and use the same strategy for organizing each drawer. Concrete action in small steps is better than no action at all.
  1. Apply Self-Compassion: Allow yourself to gain control of each business junk drawer and feel a surge of energy as you take charge. Every business junk drawer can be managed with a plan and an accountable person or team to work on it regularly. Asking for help is necessary. Find a person who is the right fit. Keep allowing yourself to gain control.
  1. Welcome Appreciation: “I appreciate the growing enthusiasm Sarah exuded during our conversation. I appreciate how Sarah shares her love of hockey with her two children. I appreciate the trial and error method Sarah uses to investigate company process issues. I appreciate how Sarah is consciously growing Clear Simple Business, LLC.”

Your Turn. Start with, “I appreciate what I heard from today’s Guest Mentor, Sarah Becker. I appreciate this week’s adventurous task because….”

“Most of the problems in our lives and world are caused by relational dysfunction, a dysfunction in how we relate: as social groups, as individuals, to animals and the environment, and even to ourselves. Therefore, developing relational literacy—the understanding of and ability to practice healthy ways of relating—is essential for personal, social, and ecological transformation.” —Melanie Joy, psychologist, author, theorist, educator

Podcast Guest Mentor

Sarah Becker.

Sarah is the founder, CEO, and Process Ninja with Clear Simple Business, LLC and has been a Process Improvement Investigator and Implementer for over 10 years. She most recently worked for a Fortune 50 Retailer where she had a successful track record of improving and enhancing processes throughout the organization; most notably, reducing the amount of time it took to complete a monthly task from 3 business days to 1 business day and a weekly report from 1 business day to 20 minutes.

Why does she do it? Sarah was in many positions where tasks took WAY too long to get done, and they were slow and painful. It bothered her so much that she had to develop a better way of doing things. And that is what she did. Far too often, she sees companies operating off manual, outdated tasks that are error-laden and lead to profit loss.

Sarah resolves issues that produce outcomes of increased clarity, improved peace of mind, reduction of errors, scalability, and profit margins. Why not create a strong company culture, increase productivity, boost employee loyalty, enhance employee engagement, and have a healthier workforce?

Sarah believes people work harder than they need to! Why not work together to make your work life easier and more enjoyable!!!

Here are five ways you can work with Sarah:

  2. Clean the Junk Drawer
