Episode 229: Life In Times Of COVID-19, Part V

George Floyd’s funeral was on the same day our daughter graduated high school. On June 4, 2020 horrific sadness overwhelmed proud parents. Mike and Sylvie Kabeya’s 2nd son, Djinn, also graduated high school. Our kids have grown up together. DOWNLOAD

This graduating class of 2020 was born into a changed world after 911. This graduating class lived through the financial crisis of 2008 and 2009.

This graduating class is living through the dismantling of their religious institutions. This graduating class is living with severe climate change and experiencing the consequences of not respecting Mother Earth. This graduating class is living through this coronavirus pandemic.

This graduating class is living through the crumbling of our democracy with its compromised legal system, discriminatory policing, civil unrest, and violence. This graduating class is observing those who live above the law and what keeps them above the law. This graduating class is witnessing the deliberate unraveling of the republican party. This graduating class is noticing those who have become accomplices tethered to the knee of institutional racism.

Their graduation, like other 2020 graduates, witnessed a turning point on June 4th. The knee of institutional racism has begun to lift off the neck of the oppressed. Reverend Al Sharpton focused a beam of light on a long and difficult journey ahead inviting us to join together in oneness disassembling racism, healing our psyches, and courageously participating in the creation of a new America. “An America for all Americans,” Rev. Al Sharpton so eloquently called out for us to aspire to at George Floyd’s funeral. He brought out how we have had our knee on the necks of blacks and other races that have kept them down. Racism has kept us all small and has snuffed out so many innocent lives well before May 25, 2020. Rest In Power, George Floyd.

The band aid approach has never worked as our history reflects. A history that started a slave trade in 1619 with the kidnapping of Africans and forcing them into labor and to be sold as commodities. Entrepreneurs and business owners have dehumanized an entire race to get ahead while other leaders joined in. This has led to the dehumanization of all of us by perpetuating that which harms humans; built in racism. NO MORE!!!

This 2020 graduating class will participate in the reconstruction of a new world and create new ways of living and doing business. They are not entrenched in the old world. They were born into a different world, a more troubled world. This graduating class is ready with resiliency and youthful energy to create a new world. It is their time to live differently than the world we were born into.

I am hopeful for a new world where racism is disassembled at its core. I say this as I still feel profoundly sad, edgy, and uncertain of how this new world will come about. I am inspired by this moment in time and encouraged by our brilliant youth. They will continue to change the world for the better. They deserve a brighter future. We can do our part by giving them the space and tools for a brighter future. A future where all of our luminous God-given lights can shine! Go CLASS of 2020!!!

Today’s guest mentor is a regular on our podcast. She provides wisdom in times of tragedy and transition. Debbie Unterman, a master Alchemist trainer, (author and therapeutic game inventor) describes the Crown Consciousness and gives ideas of how to shed light on your shadows, the cockroaches in your psychic cellar. “Do you have a beachball floating under the surface?” Debbie asks.

She believes, “IT’S TIME TO PUT ON YOUR OWN CROWN.” Debbie is wearing hers in the pictures below. She has a suggestion for keeping your nose clean and free of the coronavirus, too.

Disassembling racism in our institutions is not for the weak of heart. We have to look at “the dark side of the moon,” says Debbie. To strengthen your heart for the work we have to do to create an America for ALL AMERICANS, put your crown on, clean your nose, and roll up your sleeves. Start with reassembling your psyche and shake loose embedded racism. Listen in to breakdown the intensity of this moment. We end with a gratitude meditation.

Conscious Attentive Leadership Mentoring

After listening, do the following three WeMentor C.A.L.M. Exercises:

  1. Take this risk: Make a list of time-consuming repetitive activities in your work environment. Start with the most pressing activity you would like to automate. Then, automate it. Move on from there. Or, choose another idea that resonated with you while listening to us.
  2. Apply Self-Compassion: As you are working on your list (or other idea), assess your mental state. If you are not in a productive state of mind, stop. Reassess your goal and set a different goal. Set another date to complete today’s risk-taking activity. Adjustments are okay.
  3. Welcome Appreciation: What you can say to yourself. “I appreciate the attention I am bringing to this activity. I am noticing my mental state while doing this task. I am grateful for this moment. I am jazzed to enhance my productivity level.”

“I believe finally, that education must be conceived as a continuing reconstruction of experience; that the process and the goal of education are one and the same thing.” – John Dewey

Podcast Guest

Debbie Unterman. As an Alchemical Hypnotherapy Trainer since 1988, Debbie began using the title of Master Alchemist in the 1990s to differentiate herself from the hundreds of students who were graduating as Alchemical Hypnotherapists. She then was literally given the first Master Alchemist Certificate by her teacher David Quigley, making it official on 7/30/10.

She has put herself through the Alchemical fires of processing all of her pain and fears, taking her to her knees. It only took 40 years, aargh! Ultimately, this work has led to her authoring, “Talking to My Selves: Learning to Love the Voices in Your Head.” Her book is about the process and precepts of Alchemy. She invented the Game of Clarity in 2000 to put into play the Alchemy precepts. Her second game, Satori: the Game of Radical Forgiveness for Colin Tipping (the Creator of RF, ). Debbie is in the process of producing Shadow & Light Personality Cards based on the Subpersonalities she delineates in Talking to My Selves.
